Darkitecture is a Tasmanian architecture and construction practice specialising in luxury dark architecture — high-performance homes defined by dark material, dramatic contrast and refined restraint. Founded by national award-winning builder Kyle Zanetto and architect Saxon Hall, the practice designs and builds statewide, with completed work across Launceston, Hobart, Coles Bay and the Tasman Peninsula.
One practice, one island
Tasmania is small enough that a practice can genuinely serve all of it, and varied enough that doing so demands range. A ridge above the Tamar, a heritage street in Hobart and an exposed east coast block have almost nothing in common besides the weather being worse than the forecast said.
Darkitecture works across all of it. Design is led by Saxon Hall; construction is led by Kyle Zanetto, whose team holds national building awards. Both disciplines sit in the same practice, so the design is priced by the people who will build it — early, and honestly.
Where the work stands
Our completed work runs from the north — The HQ and Villa Donini around Launceston — to the Waverley Bathroom in Bellerive, Hobart, and out to Picnic Island at Coles Bay and Standup Point Camp on the remote Tasman Peninsula.
What building here actually involves
- Weather that finds every detail. Tasmanian exposure is the reason dark facades need proper cavity and thermal detailing rather than a dark paint colour
- Planning that varies by council. Heritage overlays, coastal setbacks and bushfire ratings each change what a site will carry — resolved at the Site Reading
- Trades who know the island. A statewide program depends on subcontractors who will travel and who have built to these tolerances before

Do you design and build across all of Tasmania?+
Yes. Darkitecture works statewide — Launceston and the north, Hobart and the south, the east coast and the north-west. Design is led from the studio and construction is delivered by a Tasmanian team, so remote sites are handled with the same program discipline as a suburban block.
What is dark architecture?+
Dark architecture is a design language built on contrast, mass and controlled light rather than ornament. It uses materials chosen for depth and permanence — black granite and basalt, charred timber, blackened steel, smoked glass — and relies on precision, because dark surfaces conceal nothing.
Is a dark house harder to build in the Tasmanian climate?+
It is harder to build well, and that is a detailing question rather than a climate one. Dark facades demand correct cavity design, thermal breaks and weather detailing, particularly on exposed sites. Built properly, a dark high-performance home is more comfortable and cheaper to run than a conventional one.
