What happens at the Threshold
Most practices begin by selling you something. We begin by finding out whether we should.
The Threshold is a single conversation — around forty-five minutes, in the studio or on a call. We ask about the site, the way you actually live, the number you have in mind, and the timeframe you are working to. You ask us anything you like.
At the end of it you get a direct answer to one question: is Darkitecture the right practice for this project? Sometimes the answer is no. A tight budget on a difficult site is better served by a different approach, and we will tell you so and point you somewhere sensible.
Why we refuse work
Dark architecture is unforgiving. Black surfaces show every misalignment. Deep reveals and concealed fixings demand tolerances that a standard build program does not allow for. Monolithic materials cost what they cost.
A project that cannot carry that discipline will not become a Darkitecture home by wishing — it will become an expensive compromise. Refusing those projects early is the single most valuable thing we do for the people who bring them to us.
What to bring
- The address, or the addresses you are considering
- Any images that have stayed with you — mood boards, screenshots, torn pages
- A budget range you are willing to say out loud
- The date you would like to be living there
Nothing needs to be resolved. It is more useful to us if it is not.
What happens next
If we are the right practice, we move to the Site Reading — a fixed-fee assessment of what the land will actually permit. If we are not, you leave with a clear explanation and no invoice.
