Our home ground
Launceston is where the practice has built most of what it has built. That matters more than it sounds — it means the trades are known, the councils are known, and the programme is not being learned at your expense.
The HQ — designed and built by Kyle for himself — is the clearest statement of the language and won its category at both Master Builders Tasmania (2021) and HIA Tasmania (2022). The Villa Donini bathroom carries the same language into a single, exacting dark interior.
Building dark in a heritage city
Launceston is one of Australia’s best-preserved Victorian cities. The instinct is to imitate it. The better answer is to be plainly of your own era — a restrained dark form sits beside heritage stock more comfortably than an imitation of it ever does.
The real constraint is planning, not taste. Heritage overlays, streetscape controls and overshadowing rules are worked out at the Site Reading, before anyone falls in love with a drawing.
The valley
Grindelwald, Legana, Longford and the river blocks bring their own problems — frost that pools, fog that sits, ridgelines that take wind from a direction the forecast never mentions. These are envelope decisions, and they are made from standing on the site.

Can a dark home work on a heritage Launceston street?+
Yes, and often better than a pastiche. A dark, restrained form reads as deliberately contemporary next to Victorian and Federation stock rather than competing with it. The constraint is planning, not aesthetics — heritage overlays are assessed at the Site Reading before any design commitment.
How does the Tamar Valley affect the design?+
Frost hollows, river fog and exposed ridgelines each ask different things of a building envelope. Orientation, glazing and thermal detailing are resolved from a physical site visit rather than a contour plan, which is why the Site Reading always begins on the ground.
