Beneath the Hazards
Coles Bay sits under pink granite that has held that position for several hundred million years. Nothing built here is going to dominate it, and a building that tries will simply look embarrassing from the water.
Dark architecture works at Freycinet for the same reason it works anywhere the landscape is extraordinary: it holds presence without demanding attention. Mass, shadow and a restrained palette read as geology rather than as decoration.
Picnic Island is our built answer to that — an off-grid retreat on a private island in Great Oyster Bay, delivered inside a twelve-month programme through an ecological approvals process, and positioned to hold the view across to the Hazards.
Constraint as a design input
Peninsula sites carry environmental overlays, coastal setbacks, bushfire ratings and national park proximity. These are not obstacles to be discovered — they define what the land is worth and what it will carry.
That is the entire purpose of the Site Reading: find out what is actually permitted before anyone commits to a drawing or a price.
Light-touch construction
Fragile sites deserve construction methods chosen for impact, not convenience. Standup Point Camp was prefabricated and relocatable so the landscape stayed the hero — the same thinking applies on the peninsula.
