The south
Hobart gives a building two things at once: a mountain behind and water in front. Most houses try to address both and end up addressing neither.
A dark language helps. When the form is quiet and the material is heavy, the view does the talking — and in Hobart the view is worth deferring to.
Steep ground
Southern sites are steep, and steepness is expensive. It also produces the best architecture, because a fall forces layered levels, retained mass and rooms that arrive at different heights. A dark building sits into that ground rather than on top of it.
The cost consequences of a steep block are the first thing resolved at the Site Reading — before a design exists to be attached to.
Heritage and the eastern shore
Battery Point and Sandy Bay carry serious heritage constraints; Bellerive, Howden and the Channel carry coastal exposure instead. Different problems, both worked out on the ground before drawing.
Our completed southern work is the Waverley Bathroom at Bellerive — Barestone graphite, blackwood joinery, smoked mirror and a curved tile wall.
Interiors as real work
Not every project is a house. Interior and single-room work carries the same discipline, and is often harder: no distance to hide behind, everything at eye level, every tolerance visible. See the Material.

Does dark architecture suit a steep Hobart site?+
Particularly well. Steep sites push a building into layered levels and retained mass, which is exactly what a dark material language handles best. A dark form set into a hillside reads as part of the ground rather than perched on it.
Can you do interiors only?+
Yes. Interior and single-room work is genuine practice work, not a lesser version of it — the Waverley Bathroom is one of the most concentrated pieces we have built. A bathroom is seen from thirty centimetres, which leaves nowhere to hide a bad junction.
